Kodaikanal Summer fest 2009
The summer festival and flower show is likely to commence at Kodaikanal in the last week of May. All the ongoing works to beautify the hill station must be completed before the second week of May, said Collector R. Kirlosh Kumar.
Presiding over a special meeting in connection with the festival held in Kodaikanal near here on Thursday, he said that top priority should be given for regulating traffic. Existing parking lots were insufficient to meet the sharp increase in the number of vehicles coming to the hill station. A suitable place near Moonjikkal and near the lake should be identified to create two additional parking lots. Even school ground or open space before the auditorium could be utilised for the purpose, Mr. Kumar suggested.
“Moreover, potholes and bumps on all prime roads should be levelled for smooth flow of traffic.”
Other traffic regulations, including conversion of one-way, during peak festival season should be followed strictly, he advised.
Two lane toll gate near Silver Falls could be converted into three lane path to ease traffic congestion and allow the vehicles proceeding to Batlagundu from the hill to move freely.
But officials informed that the three-way laning project could cost around Rs.10 lakh. Stating that the monthly collection of toll gate was Rs.5 lakh, he said that the collection should be done strictly.
The Collector also advised officials to lay tiles near Silver Falls area, beautify its surroundings and develop a small park for tourists to relax.
He also assured to take steps to set up an exclusive police outpost at a prime location between Batlagundu and Kodaikanal to help tourists in case of emergency. The transport corporation will also operate special buses to the hill station from Dindigul and neighbouring districts, he added.
While discussing the provision of basic amenities, officials informed that Kodaikanal municipality would park six mobile toilets at prime locations for the convenience of tourists.
The Tourism Department has already geared up its activities for this year’s festival. Beautification work was in full swing at Bryant Park and other tourists’ spots.
